Of course, its menu is heavy on the humble hot dog – although there's nothing humble about these sausages. The masterpieces include the famous American Chilidog, with its spicy sauce and rich cheddar cheese. Then there's the Bacondog – hot dog, grilled streaky bacon, tomato sauce, and that bright yellow almost-fluorescent American mustard.

You've also got the devilishly decadent Dog Raclette – a true love story of ingredients. Hot dog meets diced roast potatoes with a kick of fresh chives, before being completely smothered with a gorgeously gooey cheese raclette. And they all lived happily ever after.

Manhattan Hot Dog is the brainchild of two childhood friends, Laurent Spinazzola and Serge Padovano. On a trip to New York way back in 2002, American street food seduced them. So they explored the carts and street vendors of 5th Avenue to Wall Street to Central Park, and wanted to bring the American experience back home with them.

After a couple of years of eating their way through New York – a tough job, but someone's got to do it – they perfected their top-secret recipe, and Manhattan Hot Dog opened its doors in France.

But don't be fooled by the name – Manhattan Hot Dog's menu offers much more than the mighty hot dog. For a lighter lunch, you could try a traditional American bagel.

There's sophisticated smoked salmon, served with cream cheese, chives and a squeeze of sharp lemon juice to bring it all together. We love the Egg Double Bacon too – smoked streaky bacon topped with a fried egg and sprinkled with parmesan and cheddar cheese. If you're looking for a meatier brunch, opt for the Bagel Kebab – veal, turkey and chicken, with crisp salad and sautéed onions and a delicate white sauce.
